Volahn / Tukaaria - Split

Artists: Volahn / Tukaaria
Album: Split
Label: Crepusculo Negro / Rhinocervs
Year: 2011
Country: USA
Genre: Black Metal

This is a split between two LA-based one man indigenous black metal entities. Volahn is a Mayan black metal band and leader of the Black Twilight Circle in LA. Tukaaria was a Yaqui black metal band, with sole member A. also being part of the Rhinocervs collective based out of LA.

Volahn starts the tape with a calm passage on a guitar, overlaid with synths and the sounds of waves and dogs barking in the distance, a kind of "calm before the storm" before unleashing into a ten minute fury aptly titled "Native Storm".

Tukaaria steals the show on this split in my opinion. Across three harrowing tracks, A. demonstrates the pain and suffering his Yaqui ancestors endured at the hands of Spanish colonizers. The intensity in the performance is unmatched by most with relentless blasting, feverishly tremolo picked assaults, and bass lines that slither around the guitars like an anaconda. This is also the only Tukaaria release with any lyrics printed. I highly suggest reading them along while listening.

Horned Warrior - Horned Warrior

Band: Horned Warrior
Album: Horned Warrior
Label: Death Portal Studio
Year: 2013
Country: USA
Genre: Black Metal

Horned Warrior is a one-man Diné black metal band from Shiprock, New Mexico. Sole member Hellheart crafts an eclectic mix of black metal on this debut demo, from raw and raging tracks, to songs that channel more DSBM vibes, as well as some haunting synth tracks. The album is rife with contempt for life and a searing hatred for Christianity. Just as black metal should be.

Mi'gauss are a death metal band from Greensburg, Pennsylvania. They take their name from a form of ancient warfare practiced by the Middle-Algonquin warriors and their songs are about their traditional Shawnee traditions and storytelling. Musically, this is war ready death metal with a large variety of riffs and light hints of doom and black metal thrown in the mix.

Aanishinabe - 500 Year Massacre

Band: Aanishinabe
Album: 500 Year Massacre
Label: Self-Released
Year: 2012
Country: USA
Genre: Black Metal

Aanishinabe are a rather nebulous black metal entity from the USA. The band takes their name from the Anishinaabe peoples, who historically lived in the American states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Kansas, and Oklahoma and the Canadian provinces of Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba. There is close to no information available about the band, with the only source being a youtube video with a link to download the demo from mediafire. The demo is four tracks, with two displaying some incredibly raw and primitive black metal, and the other two being synth interludes. Although a bit under developed, this demo stands as a unique piece of raw indigenous black metal.
